IPBA Annual Convention
24th Annual Convention
May 2nd, 2012 to May 6th, 2012
The lovely Hyatt Regency Riverfront Hotel on the river in Jacksonville was the convention site. The Flamingos Chapter outdid themselves and made our 2012 convention "Scents in the Sun" a smash hit. The convention theme was exemplified by the gorgeous convention pin patterned after, of course, a crystal bottle with a flamingo stopper and the quirky luncheon center pieces that doubled as a very impressive headdress. Attendance was 217 people. Deborah Washington was Convention Chair.
Visits to the breath-taking Tiffany wing of the Morse Museum on Wednesday and the Lightner Museum on Thursday were splendid. Saturday night's "Jazz on the Riverfront" featured a great guitarist and a fabulous view of the "Super Moon" over the river.
Marc Rosen, keynote speaker, regaled us with "Glamour Icons" - his unique insights into the work of perfume bottle design. His book of the same title was available to attendees. At the annual meeting of members, Shining Stars awards were presented to Janice Boyd, Afonso Oliveira, Muriel Peterson, and Jeffrey Sanfilippo.
Program highlights included presentations on "Multi-functional Perfume Bottles" by Muriel Peterson & Gayle Syers; "Czech 101" by the Czech Specialty Group, and "Scents in the Sun" (Florida themed perfumes and bottles) by Barbara W. Miller and Kathy Hecht.
Auction Report: The star of Friday evening at $63,000 was the 1929 figural bottle "Bhagwan" for Patanwalla, previously known only from a drawing in the Baccarat archives. The extremely rare crystal bottle represents an Indian deity with enameled details, standing in its original presentation case. Also strong were powder boxes, compacts, art deco, DeVilbiss and other atomizers, and a variety of Czechoslovakian crystal items. Highest prices were achieved by a varied selection of commercial perfume bottles - many in original boxes - including early designs by Rene Lalique, Julian Viard, Baccarat and other noted glassmakers. Once again Ken Leach organized and presented this annual perfume bottle auction.
Sunday morning was Collectors Roundtables with topics and facilitators as follows: Bakelite by Gloria Tinker; Naughties by Shirley Grodnitzsky; Minis by Kirsten Toedter; Lalique by Walter Jones; Factices by Irene Levine; Czech Accessories by Suzie Proctor; and Souvenir Perfume Bottles by Joanne Begert.
After one last walk-through of the Exhibit Show and Sale, the convention closed at noon. Adieu until next year!
