28th Annual Convention

Scents, Wine & Roses

April 28 – May 1, 2016

Marriott Portland Downtown Waterfront

Hosted by the newest Chapter of the IPBA – the Cascadia – Pacific Northwest Chapter – attendees enjoyed the majestic beauty of Oregon & Washington States.  The hours and hours of volunteer effort from the Cascadia-Pacific Northwest Chapter was evident from the start of convention – from the handmade earrings for each attendee to the fantastic “Modern Muse” eau de parfum from Estee Lauder.  Attendees were immediately transported to the Northwest with the Marriott Portland Downtown Waterfront’s fantastic view of Mount Hood and its location on the Willamette River.

The convention started with great tours – one to the Columbia Gorge with wine tasting and a second tour of the City of Portland with afternoon antique shopping.  Wednesday night saw members enjoying the Portland Spirit Diner Cruise with dancing.

New to convention 2016 was the 1st IPBA Perfume Bottle Design Contest.  Eight artisans took the plunge and entered the contest with a total of 15 submissions. Attendees voted, and the result – a tie between Domingo Navales from Seville Spain and Gregoris Komodromos of Cyprus.

We also had the pleasure in 2016 to create a program for Girl Scouts in conjunction with their STEM Expo (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics).  The program was attended by 15 scouts with the parents and troop leaders.  They were introduced to glass making perfume bottle design by IPBA members Joanne Begert – our Young Collector Program Coordinator, Helen Farnsworth, IPBA Archivist and Teri Wirth, IPBA Vice President.  It was a great success and a concept we hope to utilize as part of future conventions.

Afonso Oliveira’s presentation “Discovering the Secret of Portuguese Perfumes” and Jo Anne & Howard Melton’s “Compacts” were fascinating and provided members with a great insight into these topics.

Roundtable sessions covered a wealth of topics from Avon – celebrating its 125th  anniversary;  early 20th century American Commercial Bottles; Lalique – then and now,  Minis; and not to overlook - Antique & Vintage bags.

The 2016 – 28th – Annual Pefume Bottle Auction was received with great enthusiasm, reaching over $400,000 in sales from bidders in 35 countries.   A highlight of the commercial bottle section of the auction was an extremely rare 1928 Parfums de March, trompe L’oeil presentation Le Bracelet Miraculeux,” f five scents disguised as an art deco bracelet, sold for $33,000.

Dr. Tom Reichert, author of “The Erotic History of  Advertising” delivered a most interesting keynote address focusing on the erotic history of fragrance advertising - from the 1941 ads for Tabu by Dana to Brad Pitt in Chanel No. 5 ads.

The Annual dinner / meeting concluded with the presentation of “Shining Star” awards to John Redgrove for his contributions to the UK Chapter’s amazing Perfume Bottle Magazine and to Peter Beesemyer & Danny Munoz for the tireless efforts and designs  to our annual Raffle.  Finally, but not least, Barbara W. Miller was awarded the Honors of the Association for her countless contributions to the IPBA from creation of the successful 1st Time Attendees Mentor Program, the preparation of the 25 Year History of the IPBA, and her coordination and leadership to the Florida Flamingoes Chapter of the IPBA.
