IPBA Members – In a League of Their Own

What A great time we had.  We were in Princeton, New Jersey for our 29th Annual Convention.  The Local Planning Group worked hard to provide us with an extraordinary and exciting program and experience.

Princeton NJ, located midway between New York City and Philadelphia offered us the rare opportunity to have tours to New York City.  On Wednesday, attendees visited the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, followed by a breathtaking boat tour around the isle of Manhattan.  Another group visited Ken Leach’s Gallery 47 and IPBA Member Sudhir Gupta’s amazing Factice collection.  On Thursday, attendees were treated to a visit at the world famous Rago Auction house followed by, what else, antique shopping in Lambertville.

Thursday’s afternoon program started with a large class of 1st time convention attendees – over 20.  They were welcomed to their first convention with an overview of the weekend’s activities.  Thursday’s program continued with a very unique and interesting presentation from Janet Ziffer – UK Coronation & Jubilee Vanity Memorabilia.  The presentation was followed by one of the cornerstones of our annual convention – the grand opening of the  Perfume Bottle & Vanity Showroom.  This year, like others, the showroom offered a breath-taking array of vanity items, from perfume bottles, to compacts to vintage purses.

The evening wasn’t over.  Members donned their favorite / vintage 50’s poodle skirt, leather jacket, etc and danced away at the IPBA Thursday night Record Hop.  From the twist to the Stroll , everyone had a great time.  Cathy Dunn, our 50’s record hop DJ, provided a great setting – including a vintage diner back drop for pictures you have to see.

Friday morning started early with gatherings of IPB A’s Specialty Groups .  The Compact and Vanity Specialty group talked about solid perfume compacts, the Czech Specialty Group features a discussion on the bottles of Franz Josef Vater.  The specialty group gatherings were followed by an array of roundtables – from an updated Czech 101 slide presentation,  to learning the proper way to pronounce French perfume names and makers, to an awesome presentation of vintage purses.  A unique and eagerly attended roundtable focuses on how fine fragrances were created.  It features a rep from Symrise Fine Fragrances and an independent perfumer who took the group through the process of identifying and blending scents to create a one-of-a-kind perfume.

Friday’s activities continued with a most informative and entertaining presentation from Bonnie Salzman on Elegant Depression Glass.  This was followed by a special appearance and presentation by Laurice Rahme – Creator & President of Bond No. 9 New York Fragrances.  Laurice Rahme was presented with an award from the IPBA that recognized her artistry in bottle design, her business acumen and passion by the IPBA, the first award of its kind for the association.  It also recognized her generous contributions to the IPBA’s 2017 convention.

A rare early-19th century French perfume carousel of gilt bronze and Baccarat crystal opened the bidding at the 2017 auction.  The 250 lot auction put together by Ken Leach, included Art Deco compacts, figural powder boxes and a stunning group of DeVilbiss atomizers. There was a great selection of striking Czechoslovakia crystal buttes in various shapes and colors.  Saturday’s activities also included the first “Perfume Alley of Niche Perfumers.”  Members were given the opportunity to meet, greet, test, and purchase perfumes from some of New York’s most unique perfumers.

This was followed by our Saturday night annual dinner & Keynote.  Richard Mamez, President of Lampes Berger – took attendees on a review of the 100+ years of Lampe Berger.  From its beginnings in 1898 to its emergence as an collector’s item with lamps associated with designers and major manufacturers such as Cristal de Baccarat, Cristalleries de Saint Louis, Emile Galle and top porcelain producers of the day.

The 2017 Annual Meeting of the International Perfume Bottle Association included the presentation of Shining Star Awards to Rusty Hernandez, for planting the first seed of what today is our fantastic IPBA Enews, Craig Farnsworth for his support and assistance in photographing the collections of members for the PBQ, and Janet Ziffer for her volunteer efforts for the annual auction, support to the Crab Chapter of the IPBA, etc.

The Honors of the Association, IPBA’s highest award to an individual,  was awarded to Susan R. Arthur for her innumerable contributions to the IPBA – including her service as Membership Secretary, IPBA President, IPBA Webmaster, Editor IPBA Monthly Enews, and numerous PBQ articles, etc.   The 2017 Annual meeting of the IPBA concluded with the nomination and Election of the 2017-2019 Board of Directors.

Sunday morning saw one of our most favorite events – Treasures Found.  As usual members brought out some of their favorite, but unknown pieces, to have our IPBA experts provide a clue on what they had.

On this high note, our 29th Annual Convention concluded with a wish to see everyone next year for our 30th Anniversary Convention hosted by the Chesapeake Crabs at the Sheraton Tysons Hotel, in Vienna Virginia –April 26-29, 2018.
