Underlay of velvet fabric set in pierced brass buttons. Perfumes of the Victorian era were oil-based and stained clothing. Ladies dabbed their perfume on the velvet of the button, which carried the scent for a long time. During the American Civil War, ladies gave these buttons, scented with their perfume, to their husbands or lovers going off to war.
