The company was well known for its ruby glass, first produced in 1848 or 1849. This ruby glass was thickly plated and can be distinguished from other ruby glass because its pieces were substantial in weight and made by the addition of coin gold - $20 gold coins were used - which resulted in a rosy red or magenta color that shows a golden glint in some lights. See "Cambridge Glass, 1818 to 1888, the Story of the New England Glass Company," Lura Woodside Watkins, New York, NY; Bramhall House, 1930.
